A recent study suggests that people who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals purchasing such drugs should be cognizant of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a reversion to starting weight in about 18 months.
Weighing Approaches
The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Doctors suggest the mechanism of the injections accounts for the amplified regain.
The injections copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this medication means hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Issue?
The NHS advise the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
People who have discontinued the medication explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if something flipping and you become starving," described a patient.
This challenge is compounded if patients have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Widespread Use
Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural changes.
