Pick of the Week
The Substance
Director Coralie Fargeat's bold satire examines the demanding standards for feminine aesthetics as well as the feared consequences of ageing. Demi Moore delivers a brilliant portrayal in the role of Elisabeth, a mature celebrity forced into starring in an aerobics show on TV. Edged out by her unscrupulous employer Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she turns to a secretive and gruesome process known as the Substance. This produces a younger clone called Sue, culminating in a steadily more parasitic dynamic between them. Friday 17 October, Paramount Plus
The Woman in Cabin 10
This Agatha Christie-esque story features Knightley as Laura, an ace reporter who decides to take some time off from covering international wars to embark on an opulent ship alongside a gravely sick Scandinavian billionaire and philanthropist, her spouse, as well as other filthy rich individuals. However when an unknown lady disappears from the ship one night and the entire crew insists she wasn't real, Laura's investigative instincts awaken. Out now, Netflix
This Supernatural Story
Steven Soderbergh pushes his directorial skills with this clever ghostly tale filmed completely through the eyes of the spirit. After a clan including mother Rebekah plus Callina Liang as Chloe settles into their new suburban house, the lens – as the unseen entity – shadows their actions. The teen shows signs of aware of the poltergeist, and it looks like defensive toward her. But why? This is an entertaining concept that doesn't outstay its welcome, featuring a surprise that may be unexpected. October 11th, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, Sky Cinema Premiere
Nicolas Cage's Meta Comedy
Nicolas Cage embraces his cult stardom in this self-referential adventure. He acts as a self-obsessed Hollywood actor playing himself who takes on a million-dollar gig to visit a festive event in Mallorca for the rich Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Hired by government spies to investigate the suspected cartel boss, his unconventional method comes in handy. October 11th, 9pm, on Channel 4
The Black Phone Horror
The director's claustrophobic thriller stands strong even without a sequel. Located in 1970s Colorado, several disappearances has left the local kids anxious. After Finney gets captured by the villain and held captive in a cellar, he fears a terrible outcome. Yet the non-functional line mounted nearby continues to ring, with eerie communicators giving advice, as the intuitive nightmares of Gwen, his sister could save him. A genuinely scary movie. Saturday 11 October, 10.50pm, Film4
The Tammy Faye Biopic
In the struggle between spirituality and money, it's a knockout win for materialism in Michael Showalter's delightfully tacky film adaptation about the fallen TV preacher and her felon spouse. Garfield portrays the greedy Jim, who states initially, “God does not want us to be poor,”. Both individuals set about profiting from the people's Christian beliefs. It's a spectacle of poor styling, excessive cosmetics and hypocrisy, though Chastain manages to depict Tammy Faye as a sympathetic figure. Next Tuesday, 1.15am, Film4
Black Bag
The current week's additional entry from the filmmaker delivers a spy mystery as tight similar to the collars sported by Fassbender's British agent. He is tasked with uncovering a double agent inside the organization from a group of five – among them is his own wife. The two stars are masters of deadpan cool, resulting in an engaging mind game of deception or honesty unfolds. The supporting cast take part the smart espionage amusement. Friday 17 October, multiple time slots, Sky Cinema Premiere
